The Zamir Chorale of Boston, specializing in music from the various Jewish traditions, will hold auditions for all voices for its 2003-2004 season at Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Road, Newton Centre, on the evenings of Sunday, September 21 and Monday, September 22 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. Auditions are by appointment only, and must be scheduled in advance, by calling the Zamir office (toll-free) at 866-ZAMIR-20 (866-926-4720). Candidates must have good vocal quality, the ability to sight-read music, and previous choral experience.
In addition to the audition, candidates are required to attend open rehearsals at Hebrew College on Tuesdays September 9 and 16 from 7:15 to 10:00 p.m.
The Zamir Chorale's 35th season, under the direction of founder and Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, will include concerts in Massachusetts and New Jersey. Our themes for the season will include "Jews in Musical Theater" and "Shirei Ahavah (Songs of Love)", along with a continuation of our recent focus on the music of the Italian Jewish community.
The 50-member adult chorale, dubbed a "virtuoso outfit" by the Boston Globe and recognized by American Record Guide as "America's foremost Jewish choral ensemble," has remained committed to the highest quality performance of music spanning thousands of years, four continents, and a variety of styles, both popular and classical. The Chorale's repertoire includes Jewish liturgical pieces, major classical works, music of the Holocaust, newly commissioned compositions by contemporary Jewish composers, and Israeli, Yiddish and Ladino folksongs.
The Zamir Chorale, recently featured in a nationally broadcast PBS documentary, performs throughout the United States, and has also toured Europe and Israel, appearing with the Jerusalem Symphony and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras under Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim. Zamir currently has thirteen recordings on the HaZamir label, ranging from Baroque masterworks to seasonal celebrations.
