Wild Peace:
A Gala Concert for Israel’s 60th honoring Joyce Bohnen

Where & When
Sunday, June 1, 2008
8:00 PM
Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Join Maestro Joshua Jacobson and the Zamir Chorale of Boston for a celebration of well-known works and hidden gems by Israel’s greatest composers, including Yehezkel Braun’s dramatic Magash Ha-kesef, Naomi Shemer’s mystical Shirat Ha-asavim, Gil Aldema’s joyous Ashira Liydiyday, Moshe Wilensky’s exuberant Uri Tsiyon, and a rollicking arrangement of Marc Lavry’s Shir Ha-Emek. The evening culminates with the world premiere of Cantor Charles D. Osborne’s stunning oratorio for chorus and orchestra, Like Wildflowers, Suddenly, inspired by the poem "Wild Peace," by Israeli poet Yehudah Amichai.

Joyce Bohnen

Zamir is proud to honor alumna Joyce Bohnen at this special concert. A gifted singer and soloist, Joyce joined the Chorale in 1969 and sang for over 18 years. She has been a longtime Zamir board member, serving as Chair from 1999 to 2005. She was one of the first women to serve as a High Holiday cantor in a Conservative synagogue, first at Temple Emmanuel in Wakefield for 13 years and then at Temple Emanuel in Newton for the past 11 years. Joyce is Director of Admissions and Recruitment at MetroWest Jewish Day School, where she has been personally involved in the creation and growth of the Boston Jewish community’s newest day school. Joyce and her husband, Michael, have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Cantors Charles D. Osborne & Aryeh Finklestein

Known for their dramatic and lyrical compositions, Cantor Charles D. Osborne (composer) and Cantor Aryeh Finklestein (librettist) have collaborated on several oratorios, including Souls on Fire and Kings and Fishermen, both of which were premiered by the Zamir Chorale. Like Wildflowers, Suddenly evokes the struggles and triumphs of Israel’s birth and flowering since 1948.
